What this transfer is really like
Two routes across the island
Saddle Road, now the Daniel K. Inouye Highway, is the fast way. It climbs to about 6,600 feet between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa and drops into Hilo in roughly two hours. The northern route through Waimea and down the Hamakua Coast takes closer to two and a half hours and is the beautiful one, with gulches, cane country, and the Akaka Falls turnoff. Guests who have never crossed the island usually want the coast one way and the saddle on the return.
Weather over the saddle
This drive can start in eighty degree sun at Waikoloa, pass through cloud and heavy rain at the summit pass, and finish in Hilo drizzle. Visibility drops fast up there and the shoulders are narrow. It is a genuinely fine drive in a comfortable vehicle with someone who runs it regularly, and an unpleasant one in a compact rental at dusk.
Stops worth building in
On the coastal route: Waimea for lunch, Honokaa town, the Waipio Valley lookout, Laupahoehoe Point, Akaka Falls. On the saddle: the Mauna Kea access road and Visitor Information Station at 9,200 feet, which pairs well with a late afternoon crossing and sunset. Any of these turn a transfer into the day itself.
Split stays between the two sides
The Kona and Hilo sides are different climates and different trips. Plenty of guests spend four nights on the Kohala Coast then two or three near Hilo or Volcano before flying out of ITO. We handle the move with luggage, a scenic route, and stops, which is usually cheaper and far less tiring than a one way rental with a drop fee.
