What this transfer is really like
What the drive looks like
You head north out of KOA on Queen Kaahumanu Highway for about twenty four miles, past Waikoloa, with open black lava on both sides and the Kohala mountains ahead. Mauna Lani Drive drops makai through kiawe toward the ocean. Most guests underestimate this run because a map makes the Kohala Coast look compact. It is not. There is almost nothing between the resorts, which is exactly why the coast feels the way it does.
Mauna Lani, the villas, and Puako
The Auberge property has a single main arrival court, but Mauna Lani Resort also includes the Islands, Terrace, and Golf Villas, plus the Mauna Lani Point condominiums and the private homes at Kaunaoa and Puako just north. Each has its own access and some are gated. Give us the exact villa or house address and we handle the rest, including a grocery stop at Foodland Waikoloa if you want the kitchen stocked before you arrive.
Golf, dive gear, and beach days
Mauna Lani guests travel with equipment. Clubs for the North and South courses, dive and snorkel gear for the Puako reef, sometimes a paddleboard. All of it is routine on this route. We also run the short hops guests do not want to drive themselves, including dinner at Merriman's or Cafe Pesto in Kawaihae and the sunset drive up to Waimea.
Departure timing from Mauna Lani
Plan backward from your airline. The drive is thirty minutes, KOA security can run twenty to forty during the afternoon rush, and agricultural inspection for checked bags adds time. For a mainland departure between 2pm and 8pm we usually recommend a pickup two and a half hours before wheels up, which still leaves room for a last swim and a shower.
