The detail
What this transfer is really like
A short run south
Kailua-Kona town is about nine miles south of the airport, fifteen to twenty minutes on Queen Kaahumanu Highway then down Palani Road to the bay. Keauhou is another ten minutes past downtown along Alii Drive or the upper highway. It is the one corner of the island where taxis and rideshare sometimes work, which is worth saying plainly.
When reserved still wins
Late arrivals, families with car seats, groups with more than four bags, and anyone landing during the evening bunch of mainland flights. Palani Road backs up at the cruise ship and dinner hours, and Alii Drive loading is tight, so a chauffeur who knows which porte-cochere to use saves real time. A fixed quote also beats surge pricing on a Friday night.
Staying in town without a car
Kailua-Kona is the most walkable base on the island. Alii Drive has dinner, coffee, and the seawall within a few blocks of the hotels, so most guests only need a vehicle for the airport and for two or three day trips. Skipping the rental means skipping resort parking and the drive home from dinner, which is the part nobody enjoys.
Day trips out of town
From town the natural chauffeur days are the Kona coffee belt and Holualoa galleries, Volcanoes National Park, Mauna Kea summit sunset with stargazing, and the drive north to Waipio Valley lookout and Hawi. All of them start and end at your hotel, and none of them involve you driving Saddle Road in the dark.
