The detail

Transport at Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection

The drive guests underestimate

Mauna Lani is about twenty four miles north of KOA, roughly thirty minutes across open lava on Queen Kaahumanu Highway. On a map the Kohala Coast looks compact. It is not, and a shared shuttle that loops Waikoloa first can double the trip. We run it direct, several times a day.

Villas, Puako, and private homes

Beyond the Auberge property, Mauna Lani Resort includes the Islands, Terrace, and Golf Villas, Mauna Lani Point, and the private homes at Kaunaoa and Puako just north. Access varies and several are gated. Send the exact address and we handle entry, luggage, and a grocery stop at Waikoloa if you want the kitchen stocked on arrival.

Golf, dive gear, and evenings out

Clubs for the North and South courses and gear for the Puako reef are routine here. The evening pattern is dinner at another resort, Merriman's in Waikoloa, or Cafe Pesto in Kawaihae, which is the kind of short run nobody wants to drive on unlit highway after a bottle of wine.

Departure planning

Thirty minutes of highway, plus KOA security in the afternoon rush, plus agricultural inspection for checked bags. For a mainland flight leaving between 2pm and 8pm we usually suggest pickup two and a half hours before departure, which still leaves time for a last swim.
