How far it really is
Volcano Village sits at about 3,700 feet on the eastern flank of Kilauea, ninety five to one hundred miles from KOA depending on route. Two to two and a half hours. Guests looking at a map of a single island are regularly surprised. It is the same as driving between cities, and it is worth every minute.
North route or south route
North through Waimea or over Saddle Road to Hilo, then up Highway 11, is the standard. South through Captain Cook, Naalehu, and Kau passes Punaluu black sand beach and the southernmost point in the United States, and it is the better sightseeing line. We pick based on whether you want a transfer or a day.
What to bring up there
Volcano runs fifteen to twenty degrees cooler than the coast and it rains often. A layer and closed shoes make the difference between enjoying the crater rim and cutting it short. If you are staying overnight, the village has a handful of inns and rentals and very little else, so plan dinner ahead.
Evening at the caldera
When there is glow at Halemaumau it is best after dark, which means driving Highway 11 home late on unlit road, often in rain. That is the single strongest argument for a chauffeur on this trip. You watch the crater, we drive, and you are back on the coast without the two hour night drive on your shoulders.
