Where it works
Kailua-Kona town during daytime and early evening, and short runs from the airport into town. Waits of 10 to 20 minutes are normal rather than exceptional.
Where it fails
The Kohala Coast resorts 20 to 35 minutes north of town, gated villa communities, Waimea and North Kohala, and anything after roughly 9pm. Return trips from resorts are the worst case, since few drivers position themselves out there on spec.
Cost surprise
A KOA to Waikoloa rideshare, when one accepts, is not cheap, and surge on arrival banks is common because a whole plane requests at once. A reserved private transfer with a known price and a guaranteed vehicle often compares well.
The practical plan
Reserve your airport arrival and departure. Use rideshare opportunistically in town. Reserve anything that is late at night, has luggage, has kids, or must happen on time.
